WORKDAYS FAQ

Questions and answers about the business days calculator. Everything it does happens in your browser.

1. General Questions

Q1: What is WORKDAYS?
A1: A business days calculator that runs in your browser. It counts the working days between two dates, adds or subtracts business days from a date, finds a deadline from a start date or the latest start date for a deadline, totals several date ranges at once, and works out how many leave days a holiday period costs. It knows the public holidays of ten countries for any year, takes your own holidays and half days, and follows whatever work week you set. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account.
Q2: How much does it cost?
A2: Nothing. There is no plan, no limit and no feature held back. Like every page on ZeroDataUpload, the tool is supported by advertising.
Q3: Do I need an account?
A3: No. There is no registration and no login. The Days between tab already shows a result for today to a month from now when the page opens.
Q4: Does it work on a phone?
A4: Yes. The six tabs sit in two rows, the cards stack one above the other, the date fields open the phone's own date picker and the calendar is sized for a thumb. Downloads (CSV, backup) work on phones that let the browser save files.

2. Counting Days

Q5: How are working days between two dates counted?
A5: Every calendar day from the start date to the end date is looked at in turn. A day that is off in your work week counts as a day off. A working day that is a public or custom holiday counts as a holiday. A half day in the work week, or a custom half-day holiday, counts as half a working day. Everything else is a full working day. The result box shows each category, and the breakdown table shows them as a share of the days counted.
Q6: Are the start and end dates included?
A6: By default both are. Settings has two switches, Count the start date and Count the end date; turn one off and that day is left out of Days between and Batch. "Clear days" in a contract means both are off; "within ten business days of receipt" usually means the day of receipt is off. The result line says how many days were counted when it differs from the span.
Q7: Is the start date counted when I add business days?
A7: No, and the two switches do not apply. Add/Subtract, Deadline and the reverse calculation move from the start date one day at a time and count only the working days after it, which is the usual meaning of "ten business days from today". One business day after a Friday is the next Monday, or the Tuesday if that Monday is a holiday. The How It Counts card on the Add/Subtract tab states the rules in force.
Q8: Why does my result end in .5?
A8: A half day in the work week (a half Saturday, for example) or a custom holiday marked as a half day counts as 0.5 of a working day. Two of them make one business day when moving by days, and they appear in the Half days tile when counting between dates.
Q9: What happens if the end date is before the start date?
A9: The dates are swapped for the calculation and a notice says so. The Swap dates button exchanges them in the fields if you want them the other way round permanently.
Q10: What does the holiday on a day off mean in the list?
A10: A public holiday that falls on a Saturday in a Monday-to-Friday week is listed, marked "already a day off", but it does not reduce the working days: the day was already off. Countries that give a substitute day for such holidays (the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Japan, the United States) have it listed on the weekday instead, and that one does count.

3. Deadlines, Batch and Leave

Q11: How does the deadline calculator differ from Add/Subtract?
A11: It is the same calculation forwards, with presets for common deadlines (one, two and three weeks, 20, 30, 45, 60 and 90 working days) and a line that says how many calendar days from today the deadline is. Its twin, Latest Start Date for a Deadline, runs the same rule backwards: the deadline day itself is not counted, so 30 working days from the start lands on the deadline and 30 working days before the deadline lands on the start.
Q12: What is the Batch tab for?
A12: Several date ranges at once, up to fifty, each with a label: project phases, sprints, billing periods, the working days of each month of a year. Every range is counted like Days between, with the same include-start and include-end settings, the table shows the days counted, the days off, the holidays and the working days per range, and the total is at the top. Download as CSV writes the table to a file.
Q13: How does the leave calculator count?
A13: You give the first and the last day you want to be away; both are included, whatever the switches say, because a holiday is a span of days. The working days in that span are the leave days to book; the weekends and public holidays inside it cost nothing and are shown as days saved. The card beside it lists the holidays that fall in the period.

4. Holidays and the Work Week

Q14: Which countries are covered, and where do the dates come from?
A14: The United States, the United Kingdom, India, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. The holidays are computed by rule for any year: fixed dates, nth weekdays (the fourth Thursday of November), the days around Easter from the Gregorian Easter computus, and each country's substitute-day rule when a holiday falls on a weekend. Ask for 2031 and the dates are right. Under Settings the list for any year can be browsed with the arrows.
Q15: What about Diwali, Chinese New Year and the Eids?
A15: Holidays that follow a lunar calendar cannot be computed from a rule, so they come from a table for 2025 to 2027. The 2027 dates are marked "estimated" until the official lists are published. For other years those holidays are missing and the list under Settings says so; add them as custom holidays when you know them.
Q16: My country or state is not in the list.
A16: Leave the country at "No country calendar", or pick the nearest one, and add the holidays you need under Custom Holidays with a date, a name and whether it is a full or a half day. Up to 200 custom holidays are kept, and a saved configuration remembers them under a name.
Q17: Which substitute-day rules are applied?
A17: United States: a Saturday holiday is observed on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after (so New Year's Day can be observed on 31 December). United Kingdom, Canada and Australia: a weekend holiday moves to the next weekday that is not already a holiday (Christmas on a Saturday becomes Monday 27, Boxing Day Tuesday 28); Anzac Day is not moved. Japan: a Sunday holiday moves to the next free weekday, and a weekday caught between two holidays becomes a citizens' holiday. Singapore: a Sunday holiday moves to Monday. Germany, France, India and the United Arab Emirates move nothing.
Q18: Can I set a Sunday to Thursday week, a six-day week or half days?
A18: Yes. Settings has presets for Monday to Friday, Monday to Saturday, Sunday to Thursday and a week with a half Saturday, and each weekday can be set to full, half or off on its own. The status pill in the toolbar shows the week in force, and every calculator follows it.
Q19: What is a saved configuration?
A19: The work week, the country and the custom holidays together under a name, such as "US office" or "India IT". Save the current settings, then load any configuration later to switch in one click. Up to twenty are kept; loading one replaces the current week, country and custom holidays but leaves the preferences and the history alone.

5. History, Backup and Privacy

Q20: What goes into the history?
A20: Every calculation you start with a button or a preset, from every tab, with its inputs and its result: the last fifty, newest first. Results that update on their own as you change a date or a setting are not added, so the list does not fill with every keystroke. Download as CSV writes the whole history to a file; Clear empties it after a confirmation.
Q21: Where is everything stored?
A21: In your browser's storage on this device, under the tool's own name: the work week, the country, the custom holidays, the preferences, the saved configurations and the history. Nothing is sent to a server, there is no account and no sync. Like every page on the site, the tool page shows ads through Google AdSense and uses Google Analytics; the Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy explain what those collect. Your dates and settings are never part of it.
Q22: How do I move my settings to another computer?
A22: Export everything under Saved Configurations writes one file with the settings, the configurations and the history; Restore a backup on the other computer reads it after a confirmation and replaces what is there. The earlier version's settings are also read on the first visit and carried over.
Q23: What does Print do?
A23: It opens the browser's print dialog with only the open tab's cards on the page: the form values, the result and the tables, without the site's header, footer and information sections. Choose "Save as PDF" in the dialog to keep a copy.

6. Troubleshooting

Q24: The count looks wrong.
A24: Look at the status pill first: it names the work week and the holiday calendar in force. Then open the calendar on the Days between tab, which colours every day in the range, and the Holidays in the Range card, which names each holiday. The usual causes are a country still selected from another job, a custom holiday on the date, a half day in the week, or one of the two include switches turned off.
Q25: My settings vanished.
A25: The browser's site data was cleared, or this is a private window or another browser or profile. The tool has no copy anywhere else; Export everything now and then and keep the file.
