1. Getting Started
1.1 What you need
- A modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari or Opera) with JavaScript enabled, on a computer, tablet or phone
- Site data allowed for zerodataupload.com, so your input text is kept between visits
- Some text, or press Sample text to see the tool at work
1.2 The layout
The tool is one page. The toolbar shows a status pill with the input's character and word count and the last transformation, and the buttons Sample text, Use output as input, Copy output and Clear. Below it sit the Input and Output boxes side by side, the Transformations card with its four groups and the find and replace row, and the Statistics, Character Frequency and Word Frequency cards. On a tablet or phone the cards stack one above the other.
1.3 Where your text goes
Nowhere but this browser. Every transformation runs on the page; nothing is uploaded and there is no account. The input box is remembered in the browser's storage so the text survives a reload; Clear removes it. The only copies that leave the browser are the files you download yourself.
2. Input and Output
Type or paste into the Input box. Paste takes the clipboard (where the browser allows it), Open a text file reads a file into the box, and a text file dropped on the box does the same. The note in the card's header counts the lines. Every transformation reads the input and writes to the Output box, which is read-only; the note beside its heading names the transformation and the number of characters it produced. Under the output: Copy, Use as input (moves the output across for the next step) and Download .txt. Clear in the toolbar empties both boxes.
3. Cases
- UPPERCASE and lowercase: every letter, in any script.
- Title Case: the text is lowercased, then every word is capitalised except the short joining words (a, an, the, and, but, or, nor, for, yet, so, at, by, in, of, on, to, up, as, via, per, vs), which stay lowercase unless they begin or end the line.
- Sentence case: lowercased, then the first letter of each line and of each sentence after . ! or ? is capitalised, and a lone i becomes I.
- Capitalize Each Word: the first letter of every word is capitalised; the rest is left as it is.
- aLtErNaTiNg: letters alternate lower and upper, skipping spaces and punctuation so the pattern stays regular.
- iNVERSE cASE: every capital becomes lowercase and every lowercase letter a capital.
4. Programming Cases
Each line is split into words at spaces, punctuation, underscores and hyphens, and also where a lowercase letter or a digit is followed by a capital (firstName: first, Name; XMLParser: XML, Parser; Request2Go: Request2, Go). The words are then joined:
- camelCase: first word lowercase, every following word capitalised, run together (userProfileId).
- PascalCase: every word capitalised, run together (UserProfileId).
- snake_case: lowercase words joined with underscores (user_profile_id).
- kebab-case: lowercase words joined with hyphens (user-profile-id).
- CONSTANT_CASE: uppercase words joined with underscores (USER_PROFILE_ID).
- dot.case: lowercase words joined with dots (user.profile.id).
- Train-Case: capitalised words joined with hyphens (User-Profile-Id).
Each line is converted on its own, so a list of identifiers converts line by line and empty lines stay empty.
5. Clean-ups
- Reverse text: the characters in reverse order, keeping emoji and other multi-unit characters whole.
- Reverse word order: the words of each line in reverse order.
- Remove extra spaces: runs of spaces, tabs and non-breaking spaces become one space and each line is trimmed.
- Join lines: every line joined into one paragraph with single spaces, as when pasting from a PDF.
- Trim each line: leading and trailing spaces removed from every line.
- Remove punctuation: punctuation and symbols removed, doubled spaces collapsed.
- Strip HTML tags: tags removed, scripts and styles dropped with their contents, entities such as & and decoded.
6. Lines
- Sort A to Z and Sort Z to A: ignoring case, with numbers inside the lines compared by value (item 2 before item 10).
- Sort by length: shortest line first; ties alphabetical.
- Shuffle lines: a random order each time.
- Reverse line order: last line first.
- Remove duplicate lines: lines that are the same once trimmed are kept once, the first occurrence.
- Remove empty lines: lines with nothing or only spaces are dropped.
- Number the lines: 1., 2., 3. with right-aligned numbers.
- Remove numbering: a leading 1., 2), (3), 4:, a bullet or a dash with its space is stripped from each line.
7. Find and Replace
Type what to Find and what to Replace with (leave it empty to delete the matches) and press Replace all, or Enter in either field. The result goes to the output; the input is left as it was. The count under the Find field updates as you type.
- Match case: the search distinguishes capitals from lowercase.
- Whole word: a match must not sit inside a longer word.
- Regular expression: the search is a pattern (JavaScript syntax, Unicode mode). In the replacement, $1, $2 and so on insert the captured groups and $& the whole match. An invalid pattern is reported under the field.
Examples
- Swap two numbers around a hyphen: find
(\d+)-(\d+), replace with$2-$1, Regular expression on. - Remove everything in brackets: find
\s*\([^)]*\), replace with nothing. - Replace double spaces after full stops: find
\. +, replace with..
8. Chaining Transformations
Every transformation works on the input and writes to the output. To apply a second one, press Use as input (under the output or in the toolbar): the output moves to the input box and the output box is emptied, ready for the next step. A list pasted from a spreadsheet is cleaned in three clicks: Remove extra spaces, Use as input, Remove duplicate lines, Use as input, Sort A to Z. Ctrl+Enter repeats the last transformation on whatever is in the input now.
9. Statistics
The Statistics card follows the input as you type: Characters (an emoji counts as one), Without spaces, Words (runs of letters and digits, apostrophes inside them allowed), Unique words (ignoring case), Sentences (ending in . ! or ?, or at the end of a line), Paragraphs (separated by an empty line), Lines and Reading time at 230 words a minute.
10. Character and Word Frequency
Character Frequency lists the twenty most frequent characters of the input with a bar, a count and a share; spaces, newlines and tabs are named. Letters only, ignoring case drops everything but letters and merges upper and lower case, which is how a language's fingerprint or a cipher's letter distribution is read. Word Frequency lists the fifteen most frequent words, ignoring case; Ignore common words leaves out about eighty filler words (the, and, of, to, is ...) so the list shows what the text is about. Both cards update live.
11. Files
Open a text file reads a .txt, .md, .csv, .json, .html, .xml or .log file, or any other text file, up to 2 MB, into the input; dropping a file on the input box does the same. Download .txt saves the output as a UTF-8 text file named texttransform-<transformation>.txt.
12. Keyboard Shortcuts
- Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on a Mac): repeat the last transformation on the current input
- Ctrl+Shift+C: copy the output from anywhere on the page
- Enter in the Find or Replace with field: Replace all
- Ctrl+V in the input box: paste, when the Paste button is blocked
13. What Is Remembered
The browser's storage on this device holds, under the tool's own name, the input text (up to 100,000 characters) and the five switches: Match case, Whole word, Regular expression, Letters only and Ignore common words. The output and the find and replace fields are not kept. The light or dark theme is shared with the rest of the site.
14. Troubleshooting
- Paste does nothing. Reading the clipboard needs a permission that some browsers and most phones refuse to a web page; click in the input box and press Ctrl+V.
- Copy does not work. The tool falls back to an older copy method and, failing that, asks you to select and copy the text yourself; Download .txt avoids the clipboard.
- A transformation changed nothing. The text was already in that form; the output note names the transformation so you can see it ran.
- The match count says the pattern is not valid. Regular expression is on and the pattern has an error, such as an unclosed bracket; turn the switch off to search for the text literally.
- camelCase gave one long word. The input had no spaces, punctuation or capitals to split on; add a space between the words.
- My text vanished. Site data was cleared, or this is a private window or another browser. The tool has no copy anywhere else.
